CHAPTER 9

The rest of the week I just kept my head down and tried to avoid people as much as possible. It was difficult to avoid Rose, though, since we were used to spending so much time together.

‘Mollie!’ Rose called out, spotting me from across the corridor. ‘You’ve been difficult to track down recently! Do you want to come over to my house tonight? I can buy popcorn and we can find a cheesy film to watch?’

‘I’m really sorry, Rose. I’ve got a lot of work on at the moment. I really am swamped.’

‘Oh, okay then,’ Rose said despondently. ‘Tomorrow night, maybe?’

‘Yeah, maybe.’

I think we both knew that that meant no. I did feel awful lying to Rose but I needed to put my time and effort into planning my brilliant new life. Rose had made plenty of new college friends anyway, she won’t be alone.

That evening I sat down in front of my laptop and opened the application page for Tanglewood College. I remembered completing the form just a couple of years ago, full of hope, prior to all the craziness and disappointment this year had brought me so far.

Name:

Okay, first stumbling block. What should my new name be? Something pretty, but not too girly. Something mysterious, but not odd. My mind had gone blank as I stared out of my bedroom window into the back garden. The daisies on the overgrown lawn caught my eye. Daisy? I said the name out loud and it sounded good. I continued to scan the garden for inspiration. Daisy Shed? No. Daisy Fence? No. Daisy Spade? Hmm, that didn’t sound so bad, and I had to move on as there were many more decisions to be made.

Address:

I decided to choose a generic sounding street name and hoped the admissions secretary wouldn’t look into it too much. “12 Church Street” sounded as good an address as any.

There was a box where I had to give a reason for my mid-year transfer. I wrote something about my dad having to move around for his work.

Please upload a recent photograph.

Okay, well I guess it was time to think about my new look. I wanted my hair to be long to my mid-back, honey blonde with highlights and a natural wave. Eyes ocean blue with long thick eyelashes that don’t need mascara. A petite nose. Bone structure like I should be on the cover of a fashion magazine. Plump red lips. I wanted long slender legs and sculpted arms. Tall but not too tall.

I was building up an image in my mind and getting ready to make the shift. I stood up and peered outside my door quickly to make sure Mum wasn’t lurking. Then I stood in the middle of my room, closed my eyes and clenched my fists and imagined Daisy Spade, from her perfect head of hair to her dainty toes. I felt a familiar tingle travel through my body then opened my eyes and rushed to the mirror.

‘I’ve done it!’ I exclaimed, accidentally out loud.
